The phenomenon of state-independent contextuality poses a priori an obstruction to characterizing the case of regular qubits, the fundamental building block of quantum computation. Here, we establish contextuality of magic states as a necessary resource for a large class of quantum computation schemes on qubits. Our proof exploits novel simple arguments and, for the first time, does not rely on Wigner functions. Our new methods can be extended to a family of magic-state protocols on qudits of any local dimension and lead to a new most-general proof in the odd dimensional case.
