Cooperative effects and Anderson localization of light with cold atoms (Prof. Romain Bachelard)

In dilute clouds, superradiance, subradiance or collective vacuum Rabi splitting are examples of such effects, which can be interpreted as signatures of long-range interactions. In the dense regime, with atoms closer than a wavelength, the rise of near-field terms changes the deal as the interactions between neighbouring particles is favored. Despite short-range interactions should favor Anderson localization of light, polarizations effects appear to play an opposite role, preventing localization. We discuss how transport properties of light are affected, both in 2D and 3D.
