“Novel approaches to nanoscale sensing using color centers in diamond” (MCQST Colloquium) (Prof. Elke Neu-Ruffing)
Individual, luminescent point defects are stable, atomically small quantum systems. Such individual quantum systems are extremely sensitive sensors, e.g., for magnetic fields. Their strength is to harness quantum mechanics for ultimate sensitivity and versatility while simultaneously boosting spatial resolution in imaging.

The talk summarizes our recent research in nanoscale quantum sensing using individual point defects as well as novel sensing approaches, e.g., via optical near fields.

About Elke Neu-Ruffing

Elke Neu-ruffing studied physics at the University of Kaiserslautern (Germany), with a focus on quantum optics and molecular physics. In 2012 she finished her PhD in physics at Saarland University (Germany) in the group of Prof. Christoph Becher working on quantum optics with diamond, i.e. using individual color centers as sources of single photons. As a PostDoc in the group of Prof. Patrick Maletinsky at Basel University (Switzerland), she broadened her research expertise to scanning probe magnetometry with color centers in diamond. From 2015 till 2019 she led a junior research group funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research at Saarland University pursuing the applications of diamond scanning probes in the Life Sciences. Since February 2020 she leads the research group on biophysics and quantum sensing at RPTU Kaiserslautern and has been tenured to full professor in 2022.
