Laser frequency combs enable new approaches to molecular spectroscopy [1]. Dual-comb spectroscopy, a technique of Fourier-transform interferometry with two frequency combs of slightly different repetition rates, holds much promise for broadband, high-¬resolution, precise, and sensitive molecular fingerprinting. Its development in the mid-infrared region (2-20 µm), where most molecules have strong rovibrational transitions, is of fundamental interest to molecular science, though technically challenging.

The generation of mid-infrared frequency combs and the realization of a time-domain interferometer of long coherence time with two of them have been the main impediments. Our feed-forward scheme [2] has shown direct averaging of time-domain interference over 2000 seconds, without any corrections. It is now extended to the mid-infrared range around 3 µm [3-4], region of the fundamental CH, NH, and OH stretches in molecules.

Another prospect for dual-comb spectroscopy is its potential for miniaturized sensors. Integrated frequency comb sources enable first steps towards an on-chip dual-comb spectrometers for gas-phase spectroscopy [5-6].
