Circular Rydberg atoms are ideal tools for exploring and harnessing the quantum. These very excited states, the closest to the Bohr circular orbit model, feature a very long lifetime, an extremely strong coupling to electromagnetic fields and a large dipole-dipole mutual interaction.

We will discuss a few experimental realizations with these exotic atomic levels. We will show how they are used to explore basic quantum phenomena in the context of Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics and how they are harnessed for quantum-enabled sensing of electromagnetic fields or for the realization of a new type of quantum simulator.
