Abstract:

Having been invited to give this talk at short notice, I am taking the liberty to present a topic a little bit off from the most beaten paths to you. The title stands for three points that I aim to cover:
1) I want to introduce causal fermion systems to you. Wikipedia will tell you that this is an approach to describe fundamental physics, unifying the fundamental forces and gravity.
2) Since this may sound like crackpottery, I will focus on the action principle at the mathematical core of the approach which consists in varying measures over operator spaces. This is all sound math, and I find very fascinating because it is curiously different from the structures  that we are used to, while still allowing us to use a lot of our training and experience.
3) Finally, to demonstrate that the approach is very approachable, I will talk about a current project in which we search for minimizers of the most simple possible setup, employing differentiable programming for the numerics, and the Bloch sphere for the analytics, arriving at toy models of discrete spacetimes.
