How can I borrow books?
Get a library card for your entire stay at the MPQ. Books can be borrowed and returned at any time using the self-checkout system at the terminal.
How long can I borrow books for?
Until another library user needs the book or until you leave the institute.
Can I take books home with me?
The library is a reference library, i.e. the books must generally remain in the institute. As an exception, you may take them home overnight or over the weekend.
How can I access journals or articles that are not freely available online?
Please contact the library, we can order most items via interlibrary loan within one day.
Where can I get an overview of all central MPG services?
On the pages of the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) all services of the MPG and other providers are listed.
What copyright conditions do I have to observe for my publication?
The MPG and the German Research Foundation recommend that authors use the Creative Commons Attribution License (CC-BY) for their publications whenever possible. Please find mandatory conditions on copyright at the MPDL website.

How do I get a book that is on loan?
Please do not hesitate to let us know and we will usually call the book back. Anyone can borrow books or journals without a deadline on the basis that they will be returned if someone else needs them. If something is needed at the same time in urgent cases, we will certainly find a solution together.

What can I do if none of the centrally funded journals are suitable for my publication?
There are many other relevant open access journals, including those that do not charge article fees. A complete overview can be found on the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
Can I use the library for working and researching?
We have several free desks and workstations as well as a beautiful reading garden, which invite you to work or read in a quiet atmosphere.
Is there information and statistics on which institutions publish in which journals?
There is a nice site called OpenAPCs from the library of Bielefeld University, which bundles data sets and overviews of the publication costs for OA journal articles from universities and research organizations.
