Adam Kaufman joins MPQ for a research stay via the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award

The scientist has received a prestigious Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Prize, which allows internationally recognised researchers from abroad to conduct guest stays at German research institutions.

Adam Kaufman, professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, JILA Fellow, and NIST physicist, has commenced a several-month guest researcher stay at MPQ and LMU on 14 July. The stay is made possible by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, which awarded him the prestigious Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award 2024.

Named after the German astronomer and mathematician, the prize is awarded annually to 20 internationally renowned scientists. It comes with a grant of 45,000 euros, allowing recipients to conduct a research project of their choice at a German research institution. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, it aims to strengthen the exchange between Germany and the recipient's home country.

During his stay, Adam Kaufman will collaborate with W2 research group leader Monika Aidelsburger and MPQ Director Immanuel Bloch. They plan to focus on various topics, including new methods for quickly producing ultracold fermionic matter, strongly correlated topological matter, and quantum information processing with alkaline-earth atoms. "I am honoured and very grateful to the Humboldt Foundation for their support. I am very much looking forward to my stay in Germany and the collaborative research that will result from it," said Kaufman.
