Cal-Bay Quantum School: Boosting Scientific Collaboration between Bavaria and California

Elected as this year’s Wolfgang Hillen Summer School, the Cal-Bay School will take place from 9 until 14 June at Research Campus Garching.

In a significant stride towards fostering scientific collaboration and strengthening academic ties in the realm of quantum sciences between the US State of California and the German Free State of Bavaria, the Cal-Bay Summer School was selected by the Bavaria California Technology Center (BaCaTec) as Wolfgang-Hillen-Summer School 2024. The funding underscores the significance of the initiative in advancing research and educational cooperation between the two regions.

The Cal-Bay Quantum School, organized by the excellence cluster MCQST and IMPRS-QST graduate school with the support of the NSF Challenge Institute for Quantum Computation, stands as a pioneering initiative, aimed at promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in the fields of quantum computing and quantum simulation. Bringing together a consortium of esteemed institutions including Caltech, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, Stanford, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Technical University of Munich, Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics, and the Walther Meissner Institute, this joint summer school serves as a beacon of knowledge exchange and academic excellence.

The forthcoming Cal-Bay Quantum School 2024 will take place from June 9 to 14, 2024, in Garching and will focus on courses on the cutting-edge fields of quantum computing and quantum simulation.

“The Wolfgang Hillen CalBay Summer School is our kick-off for an intensified long-term collaboration with the top Californian universities in the field of quantum science and technology. Young scientists in particular will benefit from the lectures and networking opportunities. We are looking forward to an exciting week here in Munich together with our US partners!” states Prof. Immanuel Bloch, Director at the Max-Planck-Insitute of Quantum Optics and MCQST co-speaker.

At its core, the Cal-Bay Quantum School seeks to deepen and broaden existing research collaborations, providing a platform for early-career scientists from diverse backgrounds to converge, exchange ideas, and gain fresh insights into cutting-edge quantum research. Through a comprehensive program covering both theoretical fundamentals and practical applications, participants will have the opportunity to engage with leading experts from California and Bavaria, delving into topics such as quantum algorithms, superconducting qubits, and ultracold atom quantum simulation. Furthermore, the planned social activities will only strengthen the bond between the two communities, fostering scientific dialogue, idea exchange, and collaboration.
