Philipp Preiss, independent research group leader, has secured an ERC Proof of Concept grant. These grants aim to bridge the gap between fundamental research and practical applications, helping to transform new scientific insights into tangible societal or commercial benefits. With his project, FermiChem, Preiss and his team will further explore the use of quantum simulators based on ultracold fermions to tackle complex problems in quantum chemistry.  more

A team of researchers from the Munich Quantum Valley, led by the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in collaboration with the quantum computing start-up planqc, has succeeded in running a register of 1200 atoms continuously for over an hour. Until now, arrangements of this size have been difficult to maintain due to unavoidable atomic losses. This new achievements marks a breakthrough on the way to scalable quantum computers. more

The theoretical physicist, who is currently being hosted by the MPQ Theory Division, has won a 2024 Starting Grant from the European Research Council. The ERC Starting Grant is the highest award for excellent young scientists in Europe. With this funding, Jad C. Halimeh and his group intend to advance current concepts of quantum simulation, particularly for higher-dimensional gauge theories and their far-from-equilibrium quantum many-body dynamics. more

On the 1st of May 2024, a new independent research group “ultracold lithium-rubidium molecules” has started at MPQ. Dr. Xinyu Luo, research group leader in the quantum many body division, has been awarded the renowned ERC Consolidator Grant of two million Euros. With the funding, the researchers take on one of the central challenges of modern physics today – the creation and investigation of unconventional superfluids. more

Thomas Udem, group leader at the MPQ, has successfully acquired an ERC Advanced Grant with a volume of 2.5 million euros. He will use the funds to his project H-SPECTR to further advance precision experiments on the spectroscopy of atomic hydrogen and deuterium and thus gradually uncover new physics beyond the standard model. more
