Abstract:

The ZX calculus is a formal diagrammatic language typically used by
computer scientists for the analysis and simplification of quantum
circuits. I will introduce the calculus and explain how it works before
explaining how a slight extension called the ZXH calculus can be used to
analyse systems in condensed matter physics. I will do this via concrete
examples performed on the AKLT state where I'll diagrammatically identify
its topological order and demonstrate how one can calculate the berry phase
primarily by manipulating images. To round things off, and show the breadth
of potential for these techniques in broader theoretical physics, I'll
extend things further afield and show how the calculus can be used to talk
about states in loop quantum gravity before suggesting some directions for
the future.
