Abstract:

This talk will be concerned with the question posed in the title, which contrary to the intuition of many physicists has not been conclusively answered even after almost a century of quantum mechanics. First, I will give a very brief introduction into the topic motivating why time of arrival is indeed an unsolved problem. Then I will describe the difficulties in experimentally telling apart the plethora of proposals for time of arrival. Finally, I will introduce a concrete experimental setup for a spin-1/2 charged particle in a quadrupole ion trap realizing a time of arrival measurement capable of overcoming this historical obstacle.
