In Tribute to Roy Glauber – a Pioneer of Quantum Optics
The Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics mourns the loss of Prof. Roy Glauber. The American physicist and Emeritus professor at the Harvard University was a founding father of modern theoretical physics and a great pioneer of quantum optics. With his groundbreaking research on the quantum electrodynamic interaction of light and matter, he has had a lastin influence on the understanding of the nature of light and on physics as a whole. In December 2018 he sadly died at the age of 93.
Roy Glauber was a true friend of our institute for many years and he had a long relationship with Herbert Walther, one of the founding directors of our institute. From 2006 to 2017 he also had a permanent seat in our advisory board. With his great ideas and valuable suggestions he has shaped the evolution of our institute over several generations of scientists to the present day. Prof. Glauber was also involved in some prominent publications from our Institute. We can hardly imagine our success without him and his fundamental work.
We thank him for his precious ideas and many wonderful years, that will be long remembered.
Sincerely,
Immanuel Bloch, Ignacio Cirac, Theodor Hänsch, Ferenc Krausz, Gerhard Rempe
