Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy characterizes paramagnetic impurities in a sample for chemistry, biology, and material sciences. We have developed a novel ESR detection method that reaches single spin sensitivity, using a microwave photon counter based on a superconducting qubit at millikelvin temperatures.
I will present results obtained with Er3+ ions in a scheelite crystal and discuss applications in quantum sensing and computing.
