Rydberg atoms offer a versatile platform for a range quantum applications including quantum computing, quantum optics and sensing. Whereas Rydberg quantum computers use individual atoms in an optical tweezer array, quantum non-linear optics is mainly based on ensembles. In this talk, I discuss a hybrid approach where individual qubits are encoded in atomic ensembles.

Compared to single atom qubit, these many-atom collectively encoded qubits has advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include robustness against atom loss and direct single photon read-out. In our experiments we have exploited the direct coupling to a single-photon emitter for continuous weak measurement of the qubit dynamics. The disadvantage of collective encoding is the additional dephasing mechanisms. Eventually, a combination of individual and collectively encoded qubits may offer the best of both worlds.
