Dr. Michael Wolf receives Danish "Young Elite Researcher`s Awards"

The purpose of the initiative is to reward and expose excellent young researchers.

Dr. Michael Wolf, a research scientist at Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching (near Munich), has received the renowned “Young Elite Researcher’s Award” of the Danish Council for Independent Research. The award amounts to DKK 200.000 and is given as a supplement to the ordinary council grant within the Elite Research Initiative in the framework of the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. The purpose of the initiative is to reward and expose excellent young researchers.

Dr. Michael Wolf was born on 24 January, 1974, in the Bavarian town Schongau. He began his education in physics at Ludwig Maximilians University Munich in 1993. In 1995 he changed to Ruprecht-Karls-University, Heidelberg, where he received his diploma in physics. He got his Ph.D. at the Technical University of Braunschweig in May 1999. Since February 2003 he has been working as a research scientist in the “Theory Division” of Prof. Ignacio Cirac, Director at Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (MPQ).

In his work Dr. Wolf investigates mathematically the fundamental limits for transmitting and processing quantum information and applies the tools developed in this context to many-body systems. The aims of his research are to optimize the use of resources, and to sharpen our understanding of the properties quantum matter can exhibit at small temperatures.

The “Young Elite Researcher’s Award” is given to him for his essential contributions to the field of quantum information. The award adds to the “Ole Roemer Professorship” which he will take on at Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen in April 2008. There Dr. Wolf will e.g. pursue projects of quantum communication that exploit the entanglement of quantum states. In 2007 Michael Wolf was already awarded the QIPC Young Investigator Award of the European research community “for the best research recently published or presented at one of the biannual QIPC major conferences.” [O.M.]
