Carbon capture and sequestration of CO2 (CCS) from both point sources and the atmosphere is critical component for mitigating climate change. However, before widescale adoption of CCS, the costs need to be significantly reduced. I will describe a novel electrochemical approach that lowers the energy cost of carbon capture CO2 by > 10x compared to previous methods. The capital investment and other operating costs are also expected to be greatly reduced.

My talk will be aimed at physicists and other scientists not familiar with electrochemistry ideas and methods, and will emphasize the basic underlying physics of a new type of electrochemistry. The method is based on change the solubility of dissolved inorganic carbon in water by changing the pH, but does not incur the entropy cost of increasing the hydrogen ion concentration demanded by the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics.
