+++ONLINE KOLLOQUIUM+++ Integrated optical trapped-ion quantum control (Dr. Karan Mehta)

The high coherence and precise control possible with trapped atomic ion qubits have enabled some of the most capable quantum computing and simulation systems currently operating. But executing useful calculations will require significant advances both in precision/robustness of basic operations and in scale; the formidable associated challenges, particularly with regard to the optics required, motivate exploration of new physical and engineering approaches to trapped-ion quantum control.

I will discuss integration of control hardware into ion trap devices, specifically focusing on our recent work using planar-fabricated integrated waveguide optics to drive multi-ion quantum logic with fidelities competitive with the highest achieved to date [1]. The optics architecture demonstrated offers a route to scaling and, as we show, simultaneously enhances stability. Aside from its relevance to quantum information processing, I will discuss how it further allows generation of optical field profiles enabling new physical operations, new photonics motivated by atomic systems, and possibilities for such techniques to advance future experiments in areas including sensing and precision metrology.
