Finding efficient representations of high-dimensional functions is a central problem in both machine learning and the simulation of quantum many-body systems.

In this talk I will discuss the relationship between these two fields of research using the framework of tensor networks, which have been invented independently in physics and computer science. I will show that this connection sheds some light on recent progress on the use of machine learning techniques to study quantum systems, as well as quantum-inspired algorithms to perform machine learning. I will explain what are the similarities and differences between the classical and quantum-inspired approaches, and present recent results on tensor network algorithms for modeling probability distributions.
