Since the early days of quantum mechanics, understanding how statistical ensembles arise from the unitary time evolution of an isolated quantum system has been a fascinating problem.

However, for many years this has been considered just a theoreticians’ game, until a series of cold-atom ground-breaking experiments during the last decade allowed to probe with unprecedented precision the unitary time evolution of many-body quantum systems.

In this talk I will discuss some recent theoretical findings about the non-equilibrium dynamics of isolated 1D models emphasising in particular the role of quantum entanglement in the relaxation and thermalization processes.
