Ignacio Cirac receives honorary doctorate from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid
The distinction recognises the MPQ Director's pioneering contributions to quantum information theory
Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) has awarded an honorary doctorate to Ignacio Cirac, Director of the Theory Division at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics. The distinction recognises his pioneering contributions to quantum information theory, a field in which he has helped lay the foundations for quantum computing and quantum technologies. The honorary doctorate is the tenth of his career.
Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) has conferred an honorary doctorate on Ignacio Cirac in recognition of his outstanding contributions to quantum information theory. Since 2001, Cirac has headed the Theory Division at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, where his research has helped shape some of the most influential developments in quantum science.
The honorary doctorate was awarded during a ceremony on 28 May 2026 at the university's Getafe campus near Madrid. In his laudation, UC3M Rector Ángel Arias described Cirac as "a pioneer and innovator" and "one of the leading Spanish scientists in contemporary science at an international level."
Accepting the distinction, Cirac highlighted the special significance of the award, describing UC3M as "one of the most dynamic and prestigious universities in Spain as well as in Europe," distinguished by its combination of "academic rigour, international openness and a modern vision of the university as an engine of scientific, technological and social progress."
Reflecting on the rapid development of quantum technologies, Cirac noted that what was once considered a dream has become reality. "Prototypes of quantum computers already exist that can perform calculations beyond the reach of any conventional computer," he said. At the same time, he stressed that important challenges remain, particularly in error correction and the transfer of new technologies into practical applications. "Work is already under way to ensure that these technologies can be useful to society," he added.
Cirac studied physics at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he also obtained his doctorate. Following research positions in Spain, the United States and Austria, he joined MPQ in 2001 as Director of the Theory Division. His work has made fundamental contributions to quantum information science and quantum computing. Together with Peter Zoller, he developed one of the first realistic proposals for implementing a quantum computer, a landmark achievement that helped establish the field.
The honorary doctorate from UC3M is the tenth such distinction awarded to Cirac and adds to a long list of international honours recognising his scientific achievements.
