MPQ Director and LMU Professor Immanuel Bloch has once again been recognised as a Highly Cited Researcher by the British analytics company Clarivate. The distinction underlines the excellence and international influence of the researchers selected: each scientist featured has authored multiple papers that rank in the top 1% of citations for their field and publication year. Immanuel Bloch has appeared on the list continuously since 2014 and was named Clarivate Citation Laureate in 2022 for his “ground-breaking research on quantum many-body systems using ultracold atomic and molecular gases.”

Immanuel Bloch‘s work has profoundly shaped the field of quantum simulation. By trapping, manipulating, and observing ultracold atoms in optical lattices, he has advanced the study of quantum many-body systems in novel ways. In addition to his 12th appearance on the list, the MPQ Director has received several prestigious honors in recent years, including the Micius Quantum Prize (2025), the Bavarian High-Tech Award (2025), and the Stern-Gerlach Medal (2023).

Citations are regarded as a key indicator of academic excellence and influence within a research field. To qualify for the Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list, a researcher’s publications must consistently fall within the top 1% of citations, with additional quantitative and qualitative analysis by Clarivate to refine the selection. As a result, only a fraction of the scientific community achieves this distinction: “Of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists, Highly Cited Researchers are 1 in 1,000,” Clarivate notes on its website.
