Abstract:

In this group seminar, I will review recent result from the Lukin Lab on quantum optimization with Rydberg arrays (Ebadi, S. et al. (2022). Science, 10.1126/science.abo6587.)
Arrays of Rydberg atoms are a versatile and scalable platform and naturally encode the Maximum Independent Set (MIS) problem, an NP-complete optimization problem. Indeed, as the experiment showed, these analogue quantum devices can be employed to prepare the solution to the MIS. Interestingly, the hardness of the MIS problem instances seems to be governed mainly by the degeneracy of ground and excited states. This talk combines a review of the experimental paper with some own numerics and invites for a discussion on the prospects of analogue quantum optimization.
