Henrik Dreyer has successfully defended his thesis!

On the 28th of September, Henrik Dreyer, PhD candidate in the theory group of Ignacio Cirac, has successfully defended his thesis at the TU München and therefore completed his dissertation. After six years at MPQ, he now leaves the institute for a postdoctoral fellowship in Oxford. From us to him, the best of luck!

In his thesis, Henrik improved a method (Tensor Networks) used to simulate Quantum Many-Body Systems. These systems are classified as either “gapped” or “gapless”. While Tensor Networks work great for most gapped systems, he showed under which circumstances they can be used to describe “gapless” systems.

What’ next?

After six years at MPQ he is now leaving the Garching research campus to take up a postdoctoral fellowship in the Rudolf Peierls Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Oxford. He will combine his role as researcher with his job at Cambridge Quantum Computing, a company he co-founded in 2014 even before his start at MPQ. While they look at a wide spectrum of quantum computing technologies, Henrik specifically investigates the applications of NISQ quantum computers, in particular in the areas of quantum simulation and quantum chemistry. This pursuit is the perfect overlap between his academic and industrial efforts. May his plans succeed!
