Cavity Quantum Optics Project:

We have recently started a new project headed by David Hunger in the group of Theodor W. Hänsch. We are located at the LMU and are closely related to the Max-Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching.

Our initial goal is to perform quantum optics experiments with microscopic optical cavities.
We focus on a particularly promising design which relies on micro-machined optical fibers. Using CO2 laser pulses we create smooth concave profiles with very small radii of curvature on the endfacet of optical fibers. After coating with low loss dielectric bragg layers, they serve as mirrors of a Fabry-Perot type micro cavity. Such cavities provide an open access mode volume as small as a few wavelengths cubed, full tunability, and a Finesse on the order of 10^5.

We want to use and further develop such cavities as a sensitive tool to study nanoscale systems and to realize a cavity QED system with solid-state based emitters.

Masters Thesis

We are looking for a motivated student to join the Cavity Quantum Optics project in the group of Prof. T.W. Hänsch at the LMU Munich. ...more
