Measurement as defined in quantum physics rarely corresponds to what is performed in the laboratory.

I will describe multiple experiments in which we have investigated the character of sequential measurements performed on a quantum system realized using the internal and motional states of trapped ions. All of these use a binary measurement to extract information from a system with a Hilbert which is larger than a single qubit, resulting in quantum coherence which persists after the measurement. Correlations between measurement results allow the evaluation of tests of hidden-variable theories, while we are also able to demonstrate crucial elements in creating and measuring encoded qubits for quantum information processing.
