There has been an explosion of new imaging technologies in biology that include photo-activation localization microscopy (PALM), stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM), and stimulated emission depletion (STED), structured illumination, and adaptive optics are revolutionizing optical microscopy.
Equally important have been the development of fluorescent proteins such
as the GFP and GCAMP class of proteins. I will describe how these
innovations are revolutionizing biology. In this context, I will give a
progress report of our development of photo-stable near infrared optical
probes that may permit super-resolution in live cells and organism
imaging indefinitely, deep tissue imaging and the potential applications
in biology and biomedicine.
