I will discuss several cases where far out of equilibrium dynamics of many-body systems gives rise to emergent quasistationary states, that can be loosely termed as prethermalized.

Examples include dynamics of spin models with either short or long range interactions, quench dynamics of Fermi systems starting from a non-interacting state, systems with strong disorder, and systems close to integrability, such as low dimensional condensates. This suggests that prethermalization is a universal phenomenon of quantum dynamics. I will review possible realizations of these scenarios in experiments with ultracold atoms.
