Brillouin scattering is a fundamental nonlinear opto-acoustic interaction present in optical fibres and other waveguides with important implications in fields ranging from modern telecommunication networks, signal processing and smart optical sensors.

Also in integrated photonic circuits, the interaction of optical and acoustic waves has been observed and this enables new advances in microwave photonics, narrow-linewidth lasers and Brillouin-based memory. I will present our recent results on storing optical pulses as acoustic phonons. This new concept allows for transferring the information coherently from an optical to an acoustic wave whose velocity is 5 orders of magnitude slower. We show the storage of several amplitude and phase states of light with a broad GHz bandwidth. Due to the stringent phase matching condition, we could demonstrate parallel storage at different frequency channels.

On the person:

Birgit Stiller obtained her doctoral degree in Nonlinear Fiber Optics at the CNRS Research Institute FEMTO-ST, Besançon, France where she was working on Brillouin scattering in photonic crystal fibers and fiber sensor applications. From October 2012 on, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen, Germany, in the quantum optics division of Prof. Gerd Leuchs. In June 2015, she joint the University of Sydney as a Research Fellow in the Nonlinear Phononics group. Her research interests include nonlinear fiber optics, photon-phonon interactions in integrated circuits and optical fibers, fiber sensors, as well as quantum communication, specifically quantum key distribution and quantum hacking.
