IQING3 is a small european workshop on quantum information science for postdocs, PhD students and master/diploma students. The aim is to bring young people together in a rather informal atmosphere to discuss new perspectives in the field, both in experiment and in theory. The workshop is funded by the ESF programme "Quantum Information Theory and Quantum Computing".

There will be three kinds of talks:
  • Tutorials (50 min.) on special topics, which the participants can suggest in their registration,
  • Open problems talks in which either an overview over a subject is given emphasizing the open problems in that field or a single interesting open problem is introduced,
  • Solved problems talks (20+5 min.) in which participants present their work.
The concept of an open-problems-session is rather an "experiment" and we encourage in particular "senior postdocs" (but also everyone else) to offer these kinds of talks.

Applications have to be sent via email to IQING@mpq.mpg.de before Oct. 12th. There is a natural limit (governed by finances and space) to the number of participants, so we can probably not accept all applications.
Your email must include:
  • Name, affiliation and current position (the workshop is for young people with non-permanent positions only)
  • Keyword description of your research interest (e.g. entanglement theory, search for green smurfs, ...)
  • Proposal for tutorials, which you would like to hear
Participants are encouraged to give a talk of either of the three types mentioned above. Please send us the title together with a short abstract. Tutorials will be accepted depending on the interest of the participants.

  •
Location: The workshop will be held in Garching (near Munich, Germany) at the Max-Planck-Intitute for quantum optics. A map of Garching can be found here.
  •
Duration: The workshop will begin on Tuesday, Dec.02 at 3 p.m. and end on Friday, Dec.05 at 1p.m.
  •
Costs: Local costs will be paid by the ESF (QIT Programme) and a contribution of up to 200 € will be made towards travel costs (paid after the conference). Accommodation will be paid on the basis of three nights in a double room (there will be only few single rooms). There is no registration fee.
  •
Social and leisure program: There will be a workshop dinner and the possibility of playing table tennis and chess (so don't forget your racket and the opening data base). We will try to organize a soccer game (against the F.C. Bayern?), which could depending on the weather, however, merge into a snowball fight.

All participants will be accommodated in Hotel Maria in Garching, Neufahrner Straße 5-9.

How to get to the hotel:

  • by plane:
From Munich Airport, take the city train S8 (follow the green signs) towards Munich till station Ismaning, from there, take the Bus 230 towards Garching, Technische Universität, and get off at the bus stop Lehrer-Stieglitz-Straße. Go into the Lehrer-Stieglitz-Straße, and turn right into Neufahrner Straße, where you find the hotel (see map). Note that the Bus 230 goes only every 40 minutes; the trip takes you 33 minutes. More detailed information about the connections you can find here. The price for a single ticket (3 zones) is 6 EUR.

  • by train:
If you arrive by train (Hauptbahnhof), take any suburban train in direction Marienplatz/Ostbahnhof, get off at Marienplatz, and take the underground line U6 in direction Garching-Hochbrück. (Note that not all trains of U6 go till Garching-Hochbrück, so be careful. Moreover, you will have to change the train at Fröttmaning, the train towards Garching-Hochbrück will wait on the opposite track.) In Garching-Hochbrück, take the Bus 291 (but not the ones labelled 291 Verstärker), and get off at Lehrer-Stieglitz-Straße. Go into the Lehrer-Stieglitz-Straße, and turn right into Neufahrner Straße, where you find the hotel (see map). The trip takes about 40mins, and undergrounds and buses go every 20mins. The price for a single ticket (2 zones) is 4 EUR.

  • by car:
In case you arrive by car, you have to take the exit 70 Garching Nord on the highway A9 (Müchen-Nürnberg). See the map for details.

How to get from the hotel to the MPQ:

  • by foot:
The Max-Planck-Institute for quantum optics can be reached by foot within approx. 15 minutes from the hotel. (see map - there is no walkway along the main road!)

  • by bus:
Take the bus 230 or 291 Technische Universität at Lehrer-Stieglitz-Straße and get off again at the stop Boltzmannstraße. The bus leaves every 20mins, the time of the trip is negligible. The price for a single ticket (short distance ticket) is 1 EUR. Have a look at the map if you want to know how to find the institute after you got out of the bus.
